About Bald Cypress Trees: Taxodium distichum or bald cypress is a lofty, deciduous conifer of slender, pyramidal habit. It displays rather attractive reddish brown, fibrous bark. A stately tree, with decided accent of texture and of form; in parks or large estates it makes a distinctive specimen; good for wet areas.

Bald cypress has moderate water requirements, and a moderate tolerance for salt and alkali soils.. In swamps it develops large flares at the base of the trunk, the so-called "cypress knees". Leaves are needle-like and may turn a rich brown in autumn. Cones globular, 1.5-3.5 cm in diam. at ends of previous year's twigs. The "cypress knees" only develop when grown in or near water for most of the year.
