About Water Oak Trees: Along streams and low ground; Tall, slender tree (50-80 feet high; trunk diameter 2-3 ½ feet). Quercus nigra is hardy to zone 6 and is frost tender. It is in flower from April to May, and the seeds ripen in October.

The flowers are monoecious (individual flowers are either male or female, but both sexes can be found on the same plant). The plant prefers medium to heavy soils. It can grow in semi-shade (light woodland) or no shade. It requires moist soil. The plant can tolerates strong winds but not maritime exposure. A staple food for some native North American Indian tribes.
